Weed Control in Strawberries

I saw a lot of familiar faces at the North American Strawberry Growers Association’s (NASGA) annual meeting in December. Guess that’ll happen if you go on enough bus tours with the same group of people.

NASGA’s annual meeting, held in conjunction with the Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable and Farm Market EXPO in Grand Rapids, Mich., covered a range of strawberry subjects. During one of the educational sessions, Doug Doohan, a professor at Ohio State University, discussed weed control in matted-row production.

Doohan laid out five steps growers have used repeatedly to get nearly weed-free fields.

  1. Plant healthy nursery stock in well-drained, fertile soils from which perennial weeds have been eradicated.
  2. Use shallow cultivation and weeding by hand to kill small seedling weeds as often as necessary until the rows are filled in autumn.
  3. Supplement cultivation and hoeing with herbicides.
  4. Apply herbicides in early fall to prevent establishment of winter annuals and seedling perennial weeds.
  5. Before mulching in late fall, apply a final herbicide to extend weed control in the spring of the fruiting year.
That’s a very brief summary, of course. There was a lot more to his presentation.

Speaking of weed control, Andrew MacRae, an assistant professor with the University of Florida, discussed weed control strategies in a plasticulture system. To hear what he had to say, click on the video below.
