You Say Tomato, I Say Deer Hunting

I recently attended the annual OPGMA Summer Tour and Field Day, this year held at the Grobe farm in Elyria, Ohio. One of the things I noticed about their fields was that they had recently been hit with a little too much rain. In fact, they had a squash field that was partially submerged. Their field tomatoes were doing OK, but compared to their tomatoes under their high tunnel, it wasn’t even close. Check out the photo below.
Every morning lately the dog starts barking as soon as she gets out of the house. Finally the other day I caught a glimpse of what she was seeing that made her so mad. It turns out, each morning we’ve had deer sneaking into the backyard – and they are working closer and closer to the garden. Now if this were in the fall, this wouldn’t be a problem. In fact, the hardest part about it then would be deciding which parts would go in the freezer versus the grill.
But since it isn’t fall yet, I’m going to have to deal with this problem. As growers, you deal with this issue almost every day. Have you thought about trying a trail camera to help figure out the best course of action? What tools do you use for wildlife control? Look for a story in an upcoming VGN.
And e-mail me at news@vegetablegrowersnews.com to share your tips, tricks and trials with wildlife control.
