Cornell NYSAES receives new equipment

Projects from Cornell’s New York State Agricultural Experiment Station (NYSAES) are set to receive more than $500,000 in new funding, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced May 27.

The investment in the station is part of the Upstate revitalization Finger Lakes Forward plan. Funded by the Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority, the projects are meant to strengthen the research, promotion and development of New York State’s agricultural industry. A total of $1.1 million was announced to bolster agriculture throughout the Finger Lakes region.

NYSAES will receive:

• $100,000 for plant growth chamber renovation and purchase of a bench top refractometer.
• $220,000 for research to support accelerated production of organic grains, corn and soybeans.
• $200,000 for the third year of a multi-year plan to research malting barley production.
• $56,874 to support the development and testing of apple varieties for the production of hard cider.

NYSAES obtained state funding last fall to secure a state-of-the-art Hiperbaric High Pressure Processing machine and establish the Institute for Food Safety at the Cornell Experiment Station.
