Lower Michigan step above drought status

Lower Michigan has been receiving less rain and now parts of the state are close to being in drought status, reports MLive.

A recent USDA drought status report shows parts of Michigan in “abnormally dry” status.

Here’s more from MLive:

“The last ranking of the drought status on June 21, 2016 shows an area shaded in yellow from Jackson to Lansing to Owosso to Flint in ‘abnormally dry’ status. This is one step before the first drought rating of moderate drought.michigan-drought-status-june-21-2016jpg-da8d9d4e0f74b138

Currently the dry part of Michigan is just dry in the top foot of soil. As of writing this, lawns are most affected, with Michigan’s large commercial crops starting to feel the stress.

With two rain systems drying up as they moved through Michigan this past week, we could see some areas ranked in the first stage of official drought.”

USDA drought status reports are issued weekly on Thursdays.
