Oceana Asparagus Day: Prepare for 2014 season

The 2013 growing season saw good prices for fresh and processed asparagus, with Michigan growers boosting fresh production while still supplying good tonnage of processed product. As thoughts turn to what next season holds, the 2014 Oceana Asparagus Day provides an excellent opportunity to catch up on new research conducted at Michigan State University and learn about other industry issues and opportunities. Topics that will be addressed include costs and benefits of irrigation, insect and disease management, performance of new varieties, an update from a speaker involved in asparagus production outside the United States, and insights on the ins and outs of existing government labor programs.

The 2014 Oceana Asparagus Day will be held March 13 at the New Era Reformed Church in New Era, Mich. Exhibitors are charged $60 for a single space. Since space is limited, exhibits will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pre-registration for this event costs $20 per person and goes up to $35 per person after March 3. Registration and exhibit reservations can be made through the Oceana Michigan State University Extension Office, 210 Johnson St., Hart, MI 49420.

Detailed information on the location, time and agenda for the 2014 asparagus day can be obtained by calling the Oceana Extension office at 231-873-2129. Once available, this information also will be posted here.
