FDA web seminar on July 30 addresses leafy greens E. coli plan

The Food and Drug Administration has scheduled a web seminar on the agency’s 2020 Leafy Greens STEC Action Plan.

The document, released in March, focuses on Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). According to the FDA, there were 40 foodborne outbreaks of the Shiga toxin-producing E. coli between 2009 and 2018. The most common STEC is E. coli 0157:H7.

The web seminar is from 2-3 p.m. Eastern July 30. The FDA will provide an overview of the Leafy Greens Action Plan, provide an update on activities and address external stakeholder engagement activities associated with the plan and how stakeholders can become involved, according to a news release.

Speakers include:

• Frank Yiannas, FDA deputy commissioner for food policy and response;
• Steve Musser, FDA deputy director for scientific operations at the Center for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition;
• Natalie Krout-Greenberg, director of the Inspection Services Division at the California Department of Food and Agriculture; and
• Jennifer McEntire, senior vice president of food safety and technology at the United Fresh Produce Association.
• The seminar will be recorded and available on the FDA website. The number of participants in the web seminar will be limited, and registration will close at noon Eastern on July 29. Registration is online.
