The shift comes as federal investigators continue to examine the multistate Cyclospora outbreak linked to contaminated produce. The increased attention has translated into stronger demand for local vegetables, with some farmers reporting record sales of leafy greens and other fresh produce.
Indianapolis-based online farmers marketplace Market Wagon reported significant growth in both sales and new customers during recent weeks as more consumers searched for locally sourced produce. According to the Indianapolis Star, companywide sales increased compared with the same period a year ago, while Central Indiana experienced even stronger gains.
Farmers market managers also told the newspaper that many produce vendors have sold out of greens earlier than usual as shoppers look for alternatives to conventional retail outlets.
