Long-term farm success planning topic of webinar series

The University of Maryland is hosting a series of webinars on the topic of farm succession planning titled “Investing in Your Farm’s Future.”

The series consists of four consecutive free webinars offered Thursday evenings, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM, beginning on Aug. 6. While produced and sponsored by the University of Maryland , the University of Delaware (UD), and the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA), the content of this series will be of benefit to farm owners throughout the region, said Joseph Fiola, UMD Extension Specialist in Viticulture and Small Fruit.

This topic is certainly of perennial interest to growers in Pennsylvania. “With all of the challenges farm business owners face on a daily basis, retirement and succession is not always on the top of the list of considerations, but are obviously very critical.” Fiola said. Careful long-term planning is especially important now, as the pandemic in the U.S. continues to have uncertain effects on farm profitability and vitality.

The series consists of four webinars. Topics to be covered in each session include:

  • August 6th Covering an introduction of the topics and retirement planning.
  • Aug. 13 Health insurance in later years.
  • Aug. 20 Business planning and communications.
  • Aug. 27 SMART goal setting, an example of farm diversification, farm succession, and estate planning tools, how to interview your team, and wrap up.

Register for individual webinars or the entire series. The webinar series will be recorded for those who may be unable to attend. Contact Joe Fiola at  for links to the recordings after each event has concluded.
