North East grower has bumper crop of pumpkins

Orton’s Fruit Market, at Route 89 and Interstate 90 in North East, grows a little bit of everything. The market is open year-round. Seasonal produce runs from cool-weather peas and broccoli right through its main fall crop — apples.

While you can stock up on anything that grows well in Erie County at the market, this time of year brings out families seeking just the right pumpkin, or pumpkins, for their fall décor and Halloween carving traditions.

There’s some confusion about how many pumpkins will be available this year. Most local farmers say they have a decent crop, but flood damage in the Northeast from Hurricane Irene wiped out some of the traditional pumpkin-growing areas, which could put pressure on Erie County’s supply.
