Syngenta buys Abbott & Cobb, cites sweet corn business

Greensboro, North Carolina-based Syngenta has acquired Abbott & Cobb, a U.S.-owned independent breeder, producer, and marketer of vegetable seeds.

Since 1917, Abbott & Cobb has served the needs of the commercial grower, distributor, retailer, fresh market, fresh-cut, and food services industries in the United States and worldwide.

“Combining the expertise, portfolios and pipelines of Abbott & Cobb and Syngenta will enable Syngenta to increase its ability to innovate and to further enhance its offer to growers,” a Syngenta news release said. “This transaction will strengthen its vegetable seeds business in sweet corn, one of the core crops in which Syngenta has a leading position globally.”

Javier Martinez-Cabrera, Syngenta Head of Vegetables Seeds North America, said: “Abbott & Cobb is a strategic acquisition for Syngenta Vegetable Seeds and it will give us access to high eating quality germplasm, and early maturity varieties to complement the Syngenta portfolio. We welcome the Abbott & Cobb team into the business and look forward to achieving great things as one team.”
