Farmers expect quality fruit despite delay

< 1 minute read

Mary Cooper has spent her entire life on a farm, and today she co-owns Farmer White’s, a Williamsburg-based farm her parents purchased in 1958.

Cooper remembers well a farming rule of thumb taught by her mother: Cherries are ready July 15, peaches on Aug. 15, and apples on Sept. 15.

But the rule of thumb is plumb wrong this year, an axiom that’s as unreliable as the summer weather. Aug. 15 is 9 days away, and Cooper isn’t thinking peaches; she’s still picking cherries. Traverse City Record-Eagle
