Farmers and ranchers can now submit nominations for the 2027 American Farm Bureau Federation Farm Dog of the Year contest, which recognizes working farm dogs and their role in agricultural operations.

The winning dog owner will receive $5,000 and a year’s supply of Purina Pro Plan dog food. The winner also will be recognized during the American Farm Bureau Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, in January 2027.

The contest highlights the contributions farm dogs make on operations, including herding livestock, deterring predators, retrieving tools and assisting with daily chores.

“Farm dogs are important partners in daily farm work and companions for many farm families,” AFBF President Zippy Duvall said.

The winning dog also will be featured in a video profile produced by Farm Bureau. The 2026 winner, Max, was recognized for work supporting his family’s farm operation.

The contest includes a People’s Choice Pup category, in which several nominated dogs will be featured online beginning in September for public voting. The winning dog in that category will receive a $2,500 cash prize provided by Purina.

Eligibility criteria for the contest include a dog’s helpfulness on the farm, obedience and temperament. Contest entrants must be Farm Bureau members.

Nominations must include written responses, at least one photo and an optional video clip. Entries are due July 11, 2026.

More information on eligibility and submission requirements is available through the American Farm Bureau Federation.
