Feb 8, 2016Center for Produce Safety selects BioSafe Systems for study
The Center for Produce Safety has chosen BioSafe Systems‘ SaniDate 5.0 and SaniDate 12.0 as participating chemistries in multiple research studies for 2016, according to a news release. The studies will investigate risk criteria and foodborne pathogen reduction practices for irrigation water. The objective is to prevent future outbreaks of illnesses associated with contaminated fruits and vegetables, according to the news release.
The study, conducted by Steven Rideout and Renee Boyer, will focus on control of Salmonella spp., E. coli 0157:H7 and L. monocytogenes. Chemistries being tested are Clorox Regular-Bleach (bleach), CDG Solution 3000 (chlorine dioxide) and BioSafe Systems’ sustainable SaniDate products 5.0 and 12.0 (PAA, peroxyacetic acid).
The Center for Produce Safety’s studies will evaluate the practical criteria for prediction of foodborne pathogen contamination in irrigation, pond and well water. The reduction of the disease population of the human health pathogens listed above will be compared after being treated with the three selected sanitizers. The study will also analyze the active ingredients of each sanitizer in an effort to educate and train stakeholders who need to mitigate food safety risks in their irrigation water.
