David “Dave” L. Smith, a longtime Michigan vegetable grower and industry leader, died March 11, 2026, at age 78.

A native of Erie, Michigan, Smith built his career in vegetable farming after graduating from Michigan State University. He and his wife, Susan, became involved with Smith Brothers Farm, where he developed a strong reputation within the state’s vegetable and potato sectors.

Smith was a founding member of Potato Growers of Michigan, the legislative arm of the state’s potato industry, and served on the boards of the Michigan Vegetable Council and the Michigan Potato Industry Commission. His work helped shape policy and strengthen advocacy efforts for Michigan vegetable growers.

In 1998, Smith transitioned from farming into a leadership role as executive director of the Michigan Vegetable Council, serving for 20 years until his retirement in 2018. During that time, he focused on advancing grower collaboration, supporting industry initiatives and helping expand the Michigan Fruit and Vegetable Expo.

Visitation is scheduled for March 26 in Temperance, Michigan, with a memorial service set for March 27. You can read the full obituary and sign the guestbook here.
