The Michigan Vegetable Council (MVC) has recognized two leaders whose work has advanced Michigan agriculture. The Michigan Master Farmer Awards honored Vance Baird of Michigan State University (MSU) and Springdale farms in Scottville, Mighican, during the Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable and Farm Market EXPO on December 11.
Vance Baird recognized for advancing specialty crops
William “Vance” Baird, Ph.D., has spent his career promoting innovation in specialty crop industries. Since joining MSU’s Horticulture Department as chair in 2009, he has strengthened ties between the university and Michigan’s fruit and vegetable industries.

Baird emphasized a balance between applied research and practical programs, ensuring support for faculty while integrating junior researchers into Michigan’s agricultural community.
He also directs MSU’s Plant Biotechnology Resource and Outreach Center, where he spearheads initiatives in fruit tree transformation systems and micropropagation for blueberries and asparagus.
His leadership has earned national recognition, including the Outstanding Leadership and Administration Award from the American Society for Horticultural Science. For more than a decade, he served on the Michigan State Horticultural Society board, deepening connections between growers and researchers.
Springdale Farms demonstrates resilience and innovation
Established in 1874, Springdale Farms has evolved through five generations, shifting from fox breeding to dairy production before becoming a leading vegetable and row crop farm. Today, the farm cultivates more than 1,000 acres, specializing in asparagus, zucchini, string beans, pumpkins, carrots and butternut squash.

Springdale Farms has adapted to challenges such as rising labor costs by participating in the H-2A guest worker visa program. The farm prioritizes strong communication within the industry and advocates for sustainable practices, engaging with government agencies and the public.
Honoring contributions to Michigan agriculture
The Michigan Master Farmer Awards celebrates both individual leadership and generational resilience.
“Springdale Farms exemplifies adaptation and innovation, while Vance Baird has shaped the future of specialty crop research,” MVC representatives said.
Together, their contributions highlight the value of collaboration between academia and growers in advancing Michigan agriculture.
