13-acre corn maze in Michigan has message for COVID-19

Johnson’s Giant Pumpkin Farm near Saginaw, Michigan, has a message for the Covinovel coronavirus, and it’s spelled out loud and clear in its 13-acre corn maze.

From the ground, the fall attraction at the Saginaw County pumpkin farm looks like an ordinary corn maze, but from the sky it spells out “COVID GO AWAY” in large block letters.

“We kicked around a bunch of different ideas,” owner Gerald Johnson said in a story by MLive Media group. “And then, just out of the blue, we decided, you know, everybody’s tired of COVID, let’s just do something on the light side and have fun with it because that’s what people come out to the farm for is to have fun.”

The farm, in business 35 years and located at 4715 N. Portsmouth Road in rural Saginaw County, opens for the season on Saturday, Sept. 12. As in years past, visitors can wander through the corn maze, see the animals on the petting farm, browse the craft store, and enjoy apple cider and doughnuts. But some things will be different this year amid the threat of coronavirus and COVID-19.

According to the MLive story:

“It’s going to be a little more limited, what we’re offering this year, because of COVID,” Johnson said.

Johnson canceled weekend events that tend to draw larger crowds, such as the car show and craft show, and he canceled tours for school groups and other group activities, too. Visitors will also be asked to practice social distancing and to wear masks in indoor or crowded areas.

“We just ask that people be considerate with each other,” he said.

Johnson said he and other farmers are feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
