Rijk Zwaan’s Tatayoyo pepper takes top Fruit Logistica award

Rijk Zwaan received the Gold Fruit Logistica Innovation Award in Berlin for its Tatayoyo brand snacking pepper.

The pepper has a distinct and strong flavor which originates from wild peppers, according to a news release. With its medium-sized pod between a bell pepper and snack pepper it is ideal for eating in a short break.

“We are very pleased to have won the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award for the third time,” Heleen van Rijn-Wassenaar, Rijk Zwaan specialist marketing and business development, said in the release. “From the very beginning, our goal with Tatayoyo was to breed a pepper that is not only sweet but also tastes savory and aromatic.”

Bianca van Haperen, Rijk Zwaan grower, said the company started breeding peppers for the desired taste, color and size.

“Now we have a product that also convinces consumers,” she said in the release.

Fruit Logistica attendees voted on their choice for the international fruit industry award from a list of 10 finalists. With more than a quarter of the votes, the Tatayoyo pepper earned the top spot.

The silver Innovation Award also went to a company based in the Netherlands. The IDEAL Melons concept from Syngenta Vegetable Seeds received the silver award.

Anecoop’s Brocomole ¿Y si? de Bouquet received the bronze Innovation Award. This innovative dip is 97% broccoli, which reduces its carbon footprint by replacing most of the avocado pulp.
