On-farm storage facilities focus of new publication

“On-Farm Cold Storage of Fall-Harvested Fruit and Vegetable Crops” covers the planning, design and operation of a cold storage facility. The new publication is authored by Scott Sanford, an agricultural engineer in the department of biological systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and John Hendrickson, an outreach program manager for the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems.

Featured in the publication is information on determining space requirements, types of storage facilities, number of cold storage rooms needed, environmental conditions required for different crops, construction materials and techniques, refrigeration systems, humidification equipment and material handling for stored crops.

The publication can be purchased for $19.95 from the University of Wisconsin Extension–Learning Store by searching for publication “A4105.” The publication also has a reference list for those whose want more in depth information. Visit the Resources tab on the UW-Extension Vegetable and Crop Storage website to see the reference list.
