Syngenta Vegetable Seeds, Emerald Seed partner

Syngenta Vegetable Seeds and Emerald Seed Co. have an agreement that will provide Syngenta exclusive access to Emerald Seed’s high-quality genetics.

Specifically, the partnership will allow Syngenta to continue investing in advancing onion seed germplasm and strengthen their offering in onion seeds, one of the most widely grown vegetable crops globally.

Emerald Seed Co. breeds open-pollinated and hybrid varieties across a variety of crops, including broccoli, cucumbers and onions, a crop where Emerald’s high-quality seed and germplasm is respected by growers globally.

“This partnership speaks to how collaboration is essential in our industry for the benefit of all stakeholders,” Matthew Johnston, global head of vegetable seeds and flowers at Syngenta, said in a news release. “We’re excited by the opportunity to share Emerald Seed’s products with more growers around the world, especially their world-class onion seeds. This aligns with our passion to serve growers of every type with the most diverse, innovative portfolio of vegetable seed varieties.”

Emerald Seed Co. was founded in 1995 as a vegetable seed breeder and producer, partnering with seed distributors throughout the world to serve professional vegetable growers. The company is based in El Centro, California, one of the most important vegetable production regions in the Americas, where it maintains research fields and has concentrated an onion breeding program for more than 20 years.

Syngenta was one of first companies to breed vegetable varieties more than 150 years ago, and today is the most global organization in the industry with vegetable seeds teams operating in more than 60 countries and shipping seeds to 124 countries.
